Context. The Optional Practical Training (OPT) program allows international students holding F-1 visas to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months after completing their academic studies. Certain students with STEM degrees are eligible for a 24-month extension of the 12-month period. The U.S. government might cancel or shorten the 24-month extension option. On April 27, 2020, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf indicated OPT is an administration target.
