DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has rapidly emerged as a significant competitor in the global AI landscape, challenging established players like OpenAI and Anthropic, with models demonstrating strong performance across benchmarks in reasoning, coding, and mathematical problem-solving (BRACAI, Milvus). DeepSeek’s models have drawn special attention for being substantially cheaper and less resource intensive to develop and run while maintaining performance comparable to more expensive models. DeepSeek uses techniques like Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) activation and multi-token prediction to optimize efficiency and accuracy and was trained using less powerful hardware (Nvidia H800 GPUs) and reinforcement learning, which lowered development expenses (Spheron, GSU).
Resolution Criteria:
This question will be resolved using the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index model rankings. The correct score range will be determined using the final, published index value for DeepSeek’s top-performing model on 31 December 2025. Scores labelled as “estimates” will not be considered.
At the time of question launch, DeepSeek’s highest scoring model is DeepSeek R1 with a score of 60. Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index scores for all of DeepSeek’s models can be seen by using the dropdown box on the top right of the chart to select all models with DeepSeek’s logo next to them.
