Ten G20 members had recognized Palestinian statehood by March 2025: India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Russia, China (all in 1988), South Africa (1995), Brazil and Argentina (2010), and Mexico (2025) (Middle East Eye). Resolution Criteria:
This question will be resolved using official government statements, press releases from foreign ministries, or credible reporting from major international news organizations. The question will resolve based on how many of the 19 G20 member countries have recognized the State of Palestine before 12:00 AM ET on 1 February 2026.
Recognition is defined as a formal announcement by a country’s government that it recognizes Palestine as a sovereign state. This can take the form of an official statement from the head of state, head of government, foreign ministry, or equivalent governmental authority. Conditional statements of intent or plans to recognize Palestine in the future will not count unless formal recognition has been officially announced.
The following will not be sufficient for resolution:
- Parliamentary resolutions or votes that are non-binding or do not constitute official government policy
- Recognition by sub-national entities (such as states, provinces, or cities)
- Statements by opposition parties or individual politicians that do not represent official government policy
- Expressions of support for a two-state solution
For the purposes of this question, the G20 member countries are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey (Türkiye), the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union and African Union are not counted as they are regional bodies rather than individual countries.
If any G20 member that recognizes Palestine officially withdraws recognition before 1 February 2026, they will be counted as not recognizing Palestine for the purposes of this question.
